Getting Married In Belize:
If you decide to get married in Belize, or if marriage is one of the reasons why you are visiting, here is how to do it. First, it is best to check with your hotel/resort management. Many resorts can assist with arranging the ceremonies and assuring that the proper procedures are followed. There are a variety of religious denominations in Belize and priests, ministers or justices of the peace can also be arranged through your resort.
In order to get married, couples must reside in Belize at least three days prior to applying for a marriage license. The application must be made at least one day prior to the ceremony (if you are planning a Sunday wedding, make certain that all the paper work is done by the Friday prior). As in all things, don’t wait until the last moment, strange things could happen.
You will need proof of citizenship. This can be in the form of an original birth certificate (or a certified copy signed by a notary public) with a raised seal which includes your father’s name. A passport will also fulfill this requirement. If you have been divorced you will need to produce a certified copy or an original copy of your divorce certificate. If you have been widowed, a death decree is necessary. If you are over 18 years old, consent from your parents is not required. A blood test is not necessary in any case. The license costs $100US and you will be off on your new life together.
